Book Presentation:
Three-quarters of a century after the invention by astronomer Henri Chrétien of the Hypergonar, the centerpiece of CinemaScope, and half a century after the launch of the process by Twentieth Century Fox, it is interesting to look back at the astonishing adventure of this innovation and the influence it has had on the evolution of cinema. Éric Rohmer, returning in 2000 to the enthusiasm he had when he was still called Maurice Schérer, encourages us to revisit this page of the history of cinema that has not yet been turned. In fact, in recent years, we have seen a renewed interest among producers and directors in filming with anamorphic lenses, perhaps under the influence of 16/9 television. Even some filming using digital technology uses anamorphosis. This reflection on CinemaScope, undertaken here by a host of French and foreign authors, also helps to shed light on the fundamental questions raised by cinema in general, particularly concerning the relationship between the spectator and the image.
