Book Presentation:
One of Hollywood’s oldest major studios is Twentieth Century-Fox, which began as Fox Film Corporation in 1915 in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Two years later studio head William Fox inaugurated a West Coast movie lot in Los Angeles. By 1935, in the midst of the Great Depression, the then financially-plagued film company had merged with Twentieth Century Pictures. The new entity was Twentieth Century-Fox under the leadership of industry veteran Darryl F. Zanuck. Through the decades the studio relied heavily on a series of sparkling leading ladies to attract filmgoers to its pictures. Sixteen of the lot’s most striking and celebrated female talents over the many years are chronicled in this volume, The stars covered are Theda Bara, Anne Baxter, Jeanne Crain, Linda Darnell, Alice Faye, Janet Gaynor, Betty Grable, June Haver, Sonja Henie, Carmen Miranda, Marilyn Monroe, Sheree North, Shirley Temple, Gene Tierney, Raquel Welch, and Loretta Young.
Book Presentation:
It seems James Parish churns out far too many books. However, his series of books dealing with films and stars of the Golden period of Hollywood are absolutely indispensible for movie buffs.
Anyone old enough to remember the old (now defunct) film magazine, "Films in Review", will recall the magazine' monthly career article on stars which covered their films in detail. The article was followed by a filmography and many photos.
The Fox Girls (starring 15 beautiful vixens and one adorable cub) is in similar vein. It covers the careers of female stars (under contract at one time) to Twentieth Century Fox studio - stars like Theda Bara, Janet Gaynor, Shirley Temple (the ''cub''), Alice Faye, Loretta Young, Sonja Henie, Linda Darnell, Betty Grable, Gene Tierney, Anne Baxter, Carmen Miranda, June Haver, Jeanne Crain, Marilyn Monroe, Sheree North and Raquel Welch.
The great thing about this book is that all of the stars' films are covered in detail along with details about their personal lives (each chapter is like a mini book). At the end is a detailed filmography and a section on photos.
Anyone interested in old stars should immediately add this great book to their library.
