The new novel Lulu finds film star Louise Brooks in 1928 Berlin playing the role of her life a childlike woman named Lulu, whose sexual desires destroy her, and destroy the men in her life as well. Actress and character became joyfully, hopelessly enmeshed in work that blends fiction with nonfiction. Her volatile relationship with her director is at the center of the book as she grapples with trying to make sense of her life. In life, Louise Brooks was rarely able to balance these elements a problem hardly unique to her time. Brilliant people with enormous promise still often soar brightly, then crash and burn. It came too little, and far too late, when Henri Langlois of the Cinémathèque Française declared decades later, There is no Garbo! There is no Dietrich! There is only Louise Brooks!
About the Author:
Samuel Bernstein is the award-winning author of Mr. Confidential, which he adapted into a stage musical with David Snyder, that premiered at the 2014 New York Musical Theatre Festival. He is the writer and producer of the Paramount and Showtime film Bobbie's Girl, and the multi-festival award-winning Silent Lies. In addition to writing for various television series, he created the award-winning digital series Kill Your Inner Child for Hearst Entertainment. He is the winner of a Stonewall Book Award from the American Library Association for his work on Uncommon Heroes, a Hermes Creative Award for Mr. Confidential, and a G.L.A.A.D. nomination for Bobbie's Girl. He lives in West Hollywood with husband Ronald Shore and a passel of dachshunds.
