Book Presentation:
Lois Weber (1882-1939) was the first native-born, American, female film director, active from the early 1910s through into the 1930s. She was a remarkable woman, an auteur (director, screenwriter and star) and an individual with a strong moral perspective. She believed that the motion picture should be used to propagandize and educate viewers, and used her films as preachments on birth control, hypocrisy in religion, politics and business, the death penalty, and women's rights. She was the most prominent filmmaker at Universal in the 1910s, chosen by the studio to direct the great Anna Pavlova in her only starring role in The Dumb Girl of Portici (1913). Lois Weber: The Director Who Lost Her Way in History is the first and only biography of this incredible pioneering woman. It makes fascinating reading and is of major importance in the study of women in film.
