Book Presentation:
CHarles Higham does another good service to the library of film biography. He is a writer of great common sense and generosity. After his useful introduction, each of the cameramen speaks for himself, and each tells different things. We all need to know as much as layman can know about how and why films are lit as they are. Nowadays, of course, it seems that all films are lit by masters, and one must imagine that technology has offered leaps of excellence to the films we now see. But in the golden days of Hollywood film-making, these men were and still remain outstanding. Leon Shamroy, Lee Garmes, William Daniels, Stanley Cortez, Karl Stray, Arthur Miller -- each one has something penetrative to say. And the recollection of James Wong Howe screen testing Garbo when she was over 40 is a treasure: an old pro falls in love with an old pro. The screen test is available, and I've seen it, and fallen in love with that mater-mistress one more time, too.
