Description de l'ouvrage :
Who knew there were 5 silent Scotch-Irish brothers behind the scenes of Universal Pictures, making it all happen? The Cochrane Brothers and the making of Universal Pictures is a 192-page coffee table book full of untold stories and unseen photos!

Brought up in Ohio and schooled in the newspaper and advertising fields, the Scotch-Irish Cochrane brothers Negley, Witt, George, Tom, P.D. (Philip), and Robert III were an impressive band of achievers who saw an opportunity in the exploding nickelodeon business of the early twentieth century. Partnered with their newly unemployed friend Carl Laemmle, they formed the Laemmle Film Service, followed by IMP the Independent Moving Pictures Company and later Universal Pictures. Together this dynamic team created Hollywood's Star System, making household names of America's Sweetheart, Mary Pickford, among others, and slayed the formidable Edison Trust dragon, unleashing explosive growth and creativity to the nascent film industry. The Cochranes were also credited with creating the distribution network in Asia for not one, but two major studios and were instrumental in introducing the American pastime of baseball to Japan.

The success of Universal was built on the Cochrane brothers ability to promote, entice, excite, produce, and sell films - a winning formula that was later copied by all the major studios. Without the Cochranes management and marketing genius, Hollywood as we know it today might not exist.

Though barrels of ink have been emptied chronicling the early years of cinema an era when a rented hall, a piano player, and a bedsheet tacked to a wall were often all that was needed to begin a career in the flickers the true story of the birth of Universal Pictures and its forgotten founding Cochrane brothers has never been told. Until now.

She attended the University of Southern California as a theater major, but switched to the school of communications. After working in Hollywood as a producer and actress, Piper followed in the path of her parents, becoming part of many small companies and creations. With her daughter, Ginger, she founded the Organic Candy Factory eight years ago. About that time, Piper's father, Tom Cochrane Jr., mentioned that he wished he had known his father better (who had died when Tom Jr. was only five). This became, for Piper, another fulltime job, and this work of passion, after six years, is finally a book!Los Angeles native KURT WAHLNER has been a graphic designer for many years, originally working at Daily Variety. In 1980, he cofounded Softalk, the first computer magazine aimed for end users of Apple computers. He has been the art director for General Publishing Group and for Gibbs Smith, Publisher. He has created the films "A Formula for Mayhem" and "Analog Roam", as well as being the camera assistant on the first 3-strip Cinerama film shot in 50 years, "In the Picture". More recently, he has been writing a history of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and is currently working on a full-length biography of Sid Grauman.

Revue de Presse :
The names of the Cochranes were never mentioned alongside the titans of the industry. They were not listed among the Thalbergs or the Wassermans, the Mayers or the Marxes. No one knew the history of how they had taken a falling clothing store marketer named Carl Laemmle and built him into the face that launched Universal and modern Hollywood. And yet their storytelling and marketing genius stood at the forefront of wave after wave of innovation that helped transform nickelodeon sideshows into the modern Hollywood studio system. --Sandy Climan, producer of The Aviator

This elaborate, oversized volume brings to light the achievements of the five Cochrane brothers who helped to establish Universal Pictures, allowing their partner Carl Laemmle to be the public face of the company. They met in 1905 when Laemmle was managing a clothing store in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and the brothers were operating a successful advertising agency. One year later they became partners and opened their first storefront nickelodeon. It was the first step in a great American success story. As Sandy Climan puts it in his foreword, Laemmle dominated the stage, but the Cochranes built it. Later, Robert Cochrane blazed a trail by establishing branch offices for Universal in Asia as early as 1914. This book is part film history and part family album, tracing the enterprising Cochranes over many decades time with evocative photographs and ephemera. There are also beautiful full-color reproductions of posters from milestone Universal releases over the years. --Leonard Maltin, Film Critic & Historian

From Forbes Magazine: When people talk about Hollywood, they picture movie stars, directors and studio sets. But it was brilliant marketers and businessmen like the Cochrane Brothers who created an industry, whose story is now told in this picture-and artifact filled history, The Cochrane Brothers and the Making of Universal Pictures. Hollywood s early years and the start of the Studio system are often described as the age of the moguls. As legend would have it, Eastern European immigrant Jews, or their children, established the motion picture business in Los Angeles. They were colorful characters who made movies as they saw fit, molding America in their own image. Or so we were made to believe. While that may be true in part, what often seems forgotten or rarely addressed are the men who made of motion pictures a business. The men (and they were pretty much all men) who strategically created the Hollywood Dream factory and made movie-making into thriving businesses. Written in a clear and direct style that is engaging throughout, The Cochrane Brothers, tells the story of a remarkable family who can trace their roots back to 13th Century Scots and Irish forebears. In this country the Cochranes fought on the Union side in the Civil War while aiding in the underground railroad. At the start of the 20th Century, the Cochranes lived in Ohio, a family of six brothers, Negley, Witt, Robert III, George, Tom, and Philip, all of whom became involved in the newspaper or advertising business. In Chicago, they proved their marketing and advertising savvy for several clients before turning their attention to the nascent Nickelodeon business. Over time, that led to the motion picture distribution business selling films to theaters using their marketing and advertising skill. And after supplying films, they decided to make them as well, and were soon a full studio. The first battle was to break free of Edison s movie monopoly which they did in a series of end-runs and legal challenges that finally put the Edison Trust to rest. The Cochrane Brothers also came upon the wily idea of having a front man as the face of their studio, Carl Laemmle, a friend of theirs who had just lost his job, was recruited and featured in ads as much the movie mogul and authority as Edison. Uncle Carl, as he became known, is generally regarded as one of the pillars of early Hollywood and was for many the face of Universal. However, it appears that behind him stood the Cochrane brothers running the business. There is no success it seems without a publicity or advertising stunt and the Cochrane brothers seemed to have an endless supply. Among them, they were the first to advertise the leading actress of their productions, thereby creating the star system and Hollywood s first star, Mary Pickford. They also launched Universal City (before it was even a city) and were the first to offer a studio tour attraction to the public, that remains a solid business to this day. Tom Cochrane, the middle brother, played a large part in creating Universal s predecessor and producing early Mary Pickford films in Cuba but he does not really take center stage until the latter half of the book. He had a passion for foreign travel and established Universal s distribution network throughout Asia, playing a large role in the development of Japan s own film industry. Tom Cochrane enjoyed living abroad so much that once he completed the task for Universal, he asked his brothers if they minded if he jumped ship and did the same for Paramount. They brothers acceded to his request and Tom Cochrane moved back to Japan. After Cochrane s first wife passed away, Cochrane remarried a woman whose mother was Japanese. And it is, Piper Cochrane, one of their grandchildren, who is one of this books authors. --Tom Teicholz, Forbes, Award-Winning Journalist & Producer
